a Jurious quest! Chord not believe that the roof could have been preserved, even if it had been shifted, but he acknowledged that had he been at the Observatory, he would have endeavoured to secure it. It may naturally be asked why he was not at his post during the typhoon. He also states that he took objection to the tile roof.
As regards (c) he explained that the wires referred to are spiders' threads, and that during the cool season, it is impossible to find the latter. He admits that very fine observations are not possible with the present wires. He has been looking for good spiders' threads for some months to replace them with.
As regards (c) he admits that the batteries should be periodically inspected, and adds that he intended to look at them in November, but fell ill. He states that they are in working order, and have not been inspected since Dr. Doberck came back.
As regards (d) he denies that the wires are worse than in Dr. Doberck's time. One broke during Dr. Doberck's absence and was renewed. The only interruption in the working of the time ball during Dr. Doberck's absence was when this wire was being replaced.
As regards (e) he refers us to the correspondence with the Colonial Secretary's Office. Mr. Plummer says
